Enterprising African Women $25 to Thrive Campaign
In 2015 I walked through the Kibera slums in Nairobi, Kenya in disbelief at the poverty that surrounded me. When I asked women how Generis International could help improve their lives, the overwhelming answer among struggling mothers was, “enough money to start my own business.” In my head I thought, how much would that be, $2500, $250? I was amazed to learn just $25 could help.
One year later, Mercy had used the money to rent a sewing machine to start her own business making dresses. The profits feed the children in her care and she is setting a little aside each month to buy a sewing machine. Benter used the money to start washing and styling hair. She rents space now but hopes to get her own shop some day. Quintet saw the need in the city for dried crayfish, used in cooking. She returned to the village where she grew up to harvest and dry the fish, then brought the product back to Nairobi to sell in the market. In 2016 we expanded the program into rural Africa. In Uganda, Margaret started a small business buying and selling cream and cosmetics to support the 6 children in her care. Each woman we sponsored has been successful and shown a profit.
Our goal is to reach 1000 women in the United States, who will sponsor 1000 women in Africa, by the end of 2017.
